SUMMARY:Beckett and the Brain
DESCRIPTION:Beckett and the Brain\n\nLike much modernist writing, Beck
ett's work has often been read as an\nexperiment in consciousness. Exp
lorations of the shape of the relationship\nbetween subjectivity, lang
uage and the body remain a mainstay of much Beckett\ncriticism, while
the more popular cultural sense of Beckett is still resolutely\nconvin
ced of the work's probing of the human condition. More recently, archi
val\nsupport for Beckett's knowledge and use of neurological, psycholo
gical and\npsychoanalytic material, allied with an increasingly domina
nt cultural sense of\nthe mind as a complex epiphenomenon of an evolve
d neurological substrate,\nhas produced critical studies exploring the
suggestive resemblances between\nBeckett's textual experiments and th
ose neurological, neuropsychological and\npsychiatric disorders that i
lluminate the modes of functioning of the human\nbrain. What has been
less fully explored, however, are the methodological\nimplications of
reading Beckett's work alongside historical and contemporary\nneurolog
y and psychology. What are the critical and ethical problems inherent
in\nrelying on a mode of 'resemblance' between Beckett's work and brai
n science?\nWhat new kinds of critical practice might be forged betwee
n disciplines? Might\nBeckett's work might have clinical as well as cr
itical uses?\n\nThe London Beckett Seminar is hosting a morning of 'po
sition papers' and\ndiscussion on the topic of 'Beckett and the Brain'
to explore some of these\nquestions. Speakers include:\n\nLiz Barry (
