Event Description

Student Workshop: Exploring Portuguese & French Literature adaptations.
There will be six self-contained workshops from 10am on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 June (3 each day) with four films in Portuguese and two in French. Each film has English sub-titles.

Manoel de Oliveira is an iconic film director, well known in France +++ but alas little known in the UK!


Monday 25 June

10.00 – 13.00: Introduction & Aniki-Bòbò (1942) (71mins) inspired by the poem ‘Os Meninos e os Millionarios’ by Rodrigo de Freitas

14.00 – 17.00: Eccentricities of a Blonde-haired Girl (2009) (64mins) Singularidades de uma Rapariga Loura, based on a Portuguese 19th Century classic short story by Eça de Queirós

18.00 –21.00: La Lettre, The Letter, A Carta, (1999) (107mins) Based on La Princesse de Clèves by Madame de La Fayette (In French)

Tuesday 25

10.00 – 13.00. The Fifth Empire -- O Quinto Imperio: Ontem Como Hoje (2004) (127 mins.)

Based on a 20th century Portuguese play, El Rei Sebastiaoby José Régio (1900 - 1968)).

 Tuesday 26 June:

10.00-13.00: The Fifth Empire, O Quinto Imperio: Ontem Como Hoje (2004) (127mins) Based on the 20th C. Portuguese play, El Rei Sebastião by José Régio

14.00-16.30: No, or The Vain Glory of Command, Non, ou a Vã Glória de Mandar (1990) (110mins).Based on the Portuguese national epic, The Lusiads by Camões (adapted in part from Homer’s Odyssey).

17.30-21.00: Abraham’s Valley, Vale Abraão (1993) (187mins) based on Madame Bovary by Flaubert (In French).
