SUMMARY:The Birkbeck Early Modern Society Fourth Student Conference: R
 estorations
DESCRIPTION:The Birkbeck Early Modern Society Fourth Student Conferenc
 e\nRESTORATIONS\nSaturday 3 July 2010, 10.00-16.30\nBirkbeck College,
Malet Street\n\nCALL FOR PAPERS\n\nThe Birkbeck Early Modern Society i
s pleased to announce our fourth annual student conference. We aim to
provide a safe and constructive space for students to present their re
search and exchange ideas with peers from a range of disciplines. The
day offers an ideal forum to showcase research and also provides an ex
cellent opportunity to practice presentation skills.\n\nOur theme this
year is ‘Restorations’\n\nA restoration is a process or a series
of events that results in something being returned to its former state
.\n\nWe are looking for papers based on subjects connected to our conf
erence theme. We define the early modern period as being roughly 1500-
1800. We are an interdisciplinary society and we welcome papers from a
range of disciplines.\n\nHere are some points which you may wish to c
onsider:\n\n• 2010 marks both the 350th anniversary of the restorati
on of the British monarchy after the British Civil Wars of the 1640s a
nd the Interregnum of the 1650s\n\n• 2010 is also the 350th annivers
ary of the founding of the Royal Society – one of the key events of
the Restoration.\n\n• How was the Restoration era different from the
first half of the seventeenth century?\n\n• Restorations may be int
erpreted as the processes of renovations or repairs such as those carr
ied out on furniture, books, paintings, printed images, household good
s, tools, etc.\n\n• When something is restored, it displaces the pre
vious state. Is this always an improvement?\n\n• Political, social,
cultural and intellectual restorations may be met with resistance from
those who are unlikely to gain from the new state of affairs. How doe
s this resistance manifest itself? How is it met?\n\nYou are invited t
o submit a proposal of 250 words maximum for a paper lasting 20 minute
s (approximately 2,000 words) to the Conference Organiser, Robin Rowle
s, by Monday 31 May 2010.\n\nFor more information visit http://dandeli
