The Djuna Barnes Research Seminar returns from 10 December. As before, the group will meet monthly for close readings of Barnes’s fiction, poetry plays and journalism, and to hear speakers present current research. Anyone with an interest in Barnes and the ideas raised by her diverse body of work is welcome. In the next session we will look at her first publication, The Book of Repulsive Women (1915). In later life Barnes refused for the collection to be re-published, omitted it from her bibliography and dismissed its provocative title as ‘idiotic’. Yet the book continues in spite of its author to engage, beguile and divide readers for its combination of poetry and illustration, striking imagery, curious form and unusual publication history. 

Monday 10 December, 6–8 pm, Room 234, Senate House, Malet St, London WC1E 7HU.

Reading for the session will be available to download from the Institute of English Studies website later this week.
