Freud Reading Group

A new Freud Reading Group has been established for Spring 2015. As with previous Freud Reading Groups, our aim is to complete a systematic chronological reading of the entire works of Freud.

The group meets fortnightly, usually on Wednesday afternoons. We welcome members from all departments and disciplines, from post-graduate students to established academics. We will be using The Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud (although members are also welcome to work from their own copies of the text).

Our first meeting will be held on Wednesday 25th February at 3pm in room 112 (Birkbeck School of Arts, 43 Gordon Square). For this first session we will be joined by Lisa Baraitser, convenor of the previous Freud Reading Group at Birkbeck, who will share her experiences of reading Freud chronologically and offer us advice for future sessions.

We will be discussing pp. 5-59 in Volume One of The Standard Edition; this covers a number of short reports and reviews, including 'Report on my Studies in Paris and Berlin', 'Preface to the Translation of Charcot's Lectures on the Diseases of the Nervous System', 'Observation of a Severe Case of Hemi-anaesthesia in a Hysterical Male', 'Two Short Reviews', and 'Hysteria'.

We will also use this first session to decide on reading material for subsequent meetings.
