This is a group dedicated to the discussion of the current situation of the disciplines of history of art and media studies, in the context of radical changes to the HE sector.

Image Problems workshop

This group has been established by Laura Mulvey and Leslie Topp to provide a forum for the discussion of the current situation of the disciplines of history of art and media studies, in the context of radical changes to the HE sector.  It involves both the Department of History of Art and Screen Media and the Department of Media and Cultural Studies, and is open to all staff (permanent and sessional) and students studying at any level.

 

Our main activity is the planning of a workshop, scheduled for Saturday 25 June 2011, 2-5pm.

 

A meeting of a working party of all interested staff and students was held on 28 March.

The workshop itself, with the title 'Image Problems: History of Art and Media Studies in the New Higher Education Landscape' happened on 25 June, 2-5pm.  

 

It consisted of a general introduction, break out groups, a report back session and a discussion of future action.  Four main themes were discussed:

  1. humanities and the public sphere
  2. history of art 'image problems'
  3. film and media studies 'image problems'
  4. the economic argument for the humanities

Thought some people might be interested in the two day 'Whose University?' event at Goldsmiths on 9-10 June. Some of the issues raised should be relevant to our discussions. I hope to attend.

According to The Guardian

Studying for a degree in art history turned out to be an interesting career move for Kate Middleton, leading her to meet and marry a prince. However, most art history graduates will have to set their sights slightly lower.

Graduates will have gained a historical and critical awareness of paintings, sculpture and architecture, learning about great works of art from the Renaissance to the present day. Unsurprisingly, jobs as curators in museums or galleries, arts administrators, heritage officers or auctioneers are popular, but flexibility is essential.

As we are only starting out I think limiting our potential audience is a little premature. Should definitely be part of the debate, but it might be that from a workshop we find that there a number of initiatives we could take forward with different targets in mind, depending on the interests of those involved.
Just looking over the notes of the meeting I know that I have absolutely no interest in dialogue with the government or framing economic arguments, but I am excited about the idea of more outreach and work on public perception. But at this early stage there should be room to explore all these approaches and the potential pros and cons of each.

Hello Leslie, thank you for this invite. One of the questions in my mind since the last meeting is: do we need to establish our target audience?
