Memory and Violence

Information

Memory and Violence

The Memory and Violence working group is a new interdisciplinary group, open to all with an interest in the relationships between collective memory, public history, trauma, violence, representation, and the politics of memorialisation and memory work. We will be reading some key texts in these fields, and will also be a space for postgraduate students and researchers to discuss their own work with each other.

Based at the Birkbeck College School of Arts, we aim to meet once a month during term time.

Members: 12
Latest Activity: Mar 21

First meeting - Thurs 8 November 2012, 4-6pm

We'll be meeting in room 112 at the Birkbeck School of Arts, 43 Gordon Square - all welcome!

Reading for this meeting will focus on photography, violence and representation; pdfs are attached below.

Please also let me know if anyone would like to use the opportunity to present or discuss their own research; it doesn't necessarily have to be related to the reading, and can be kept quite informal and focused on research-in-progress.

Any questions/ queries/ thoughts for future texts, please feel free to email me: naomiroux(at)gmail(dot)com.

Dear all, I have been in discussion with Naomi and we are thinking of extending the remit of the group to include the visual representation of war in art. i also hope to organise the odd trip or visit to archives etc. Please let me know if your interested.

Hi all,

Some initial thoughts on the readings from Geoff, attached here:

Memory and violence - GB comments.doc

Looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday. I may bring along some images from my own work that I think resonate with the readings, as a possible starting point for discussion - please feel free to do the same, if you like.
