The next ON Seminar is scheduled for Tuesday 22nd March. Its
topic is 'Beckett, modernism and poetic self-expression' and
will be led by Robert Kiely.

We will be meeting slightly earlier this week to accommodate
the evening's Anne Carson event; the session will run from 5pm
to 6.30pm.

The venue remains the same: the Parlour, 32 Tavistock Square.
Refreshments, in the form of cheap wine and Kettle chips, will
be served.

If the new time is problematic, or if is this is too short
notice for you to be able to make it, please let Holly or I
know ASAP, and we can give some thought to rescheduling.

Hope to see you there,

Alex & Holly

Only since we have started using violence ourselves, has a realistic dialogue begun to
develop, as the system is having to pull back its veil and speak - Ulrike Meinhoff

Content Exceeds Phrase : What is Leftist Poetics

I don’t talk to the police except never / my poetry is not for them - Anna Mendelssohn
*
The social revolution of the nineteenth century cannot draw its poetry from the past, but
only from the future, It cannot begin with itself, before it has stripped off all superstition in
regard to the past. Earlier revolutions required world-historical recollections in order to
drug themselves concerning their own content. In order to arrive at its content, the
revolution of the nineteenth century must let the dead bury their dead. Their the phrase
went beyond the content; here the content goes beyond the phrase - Karl Marx
*
Events in one voice are left totally void in the other voice, which thus becomes the
negation of the first - Theodor Adorno
*
The word lives a double life . . . . this battle of worlds, this battle of two powers forever
being waged in the word, produces the double life of the language; two circles of flying
stars- Velemir Khlebnikov
*
The energy I put into The System of Dante’s Hell, if I had put that same energy into devising a
method to blow up the White House, it might have been more beneficial to my people -
Amiri Baraka
*
So let us invite all the sister arts of the drama, not in order to create an ‘integrated work
of art’ in which they all offer themselves up and are lost, but so that together with the
drama they may further the common task in their different ways; and their relations with
each other consist in this: that they lead to mutual alienation - Bertolt Brecht
*
How could what we were experiencing, I asked myself, be delineated in such a way we
could recognise ourselves in it. The form would be monstrous, would cause dizziness -
Peter Weiss
