This week we're reading around the theme of laughter as something broken-up, and disruptive - see the discussion on the group page for more information, to submit your primary texts, and theoretical reading.*(Walter Benjamin, The Arcades Project)See More
We have a change of date and venue for the next meeting - now on the 24th April, Tuesday, 6pm in the PG room (room 417) at the very top of stair J in Gordon Square. Our April meeting takes its theme from Walter Benjamin’s sentiment in the Arcades project: ‘Laughter is shattered articulation.’ This is Emma’s brainchild, and she's gone for a quite experimental piece of theory for us to read – I look forward to reading what you guys choose to post below for our primary texts.I’ve picked a…See More

the fragmented text in all its guises.... Now, I realise just what a huge theme this is, but that's what I'm hoping will fire all our critical cylinders! (ie. a get-out-of-jail-free card) We're back in Room 112 Gordon Square, 20th March at 6pm. I've attached a piece on the 'Fictions of Reader Response' which I suggest we read, but if it's not challenging enough please do let me have your suggestions for an alternative critical text. My personal pick is a really chilling moment from The Woman in…See More

The meeting on Tuesday was great; we've picked some really interesting themes for the next few sessions. For each, we'll read a piece of theoretical work, and each choose a (short!) piece of material from our own areas of interest. So, our first theme is the wounded or fragmented body within the "romance" (define as you like).Starting with the relatively conventional, we've agreed to read the introduction to Deborah Harter's The Body in Pieces (attached below, pdf), and I've selected a part of…See More

Thanks Beatrice, I found your presentation so interesting - hadn't realised we had so many research interests in common. Would definitely love to meet up for a chat some time, I reckon we should set up some kind of body reading group too - there must be other people about with similar ideas! Oooh and thanks for the Gomel article, hadn't seen that one before!
