The March meeting will focus on epigrams, a popular form of laudatory or satirical writing in the early modern period, labelled by Puttenham in The arte of English poesie, 'pretie merry conceits'.  Popular epigrammatists such as John Donne, John Owen, Sir John Harington, Sir John Davies or John Davies of Hereford worked on a form with classical roots, and owed much to the work of Martial (and their name didn't have to be John - that seems to be a coincidence of the ones I've selected here!).…See More

The text for the January meeting will be John Marston's Parasitaster or The Fawne (1606 text - available on EEBO) and we shall be focusing especially on the Don Zuccone subplot (C3v-D2v and I2v-I3r).  All welcome!See More

For our last event before Christmas we will be reading from 'The Accomplisht Cook' by Robert May. Various editions are available on EEBO, we will focus on the 1685 version which is also available in modern facsimile in some libraries. The Bodleian and the BL have original copies.
