Historical Avant-Garde Reading Group

This is a reading/discussion group on the (historical) avant-garde, as distinct from modernism more generally, i.e. focusing on expressionism, futurism, vorticism, constructivism, dada, early surrealism, etc. This list isn't intended to be restrictive, and there are many other isms that could be included, as well as less programmatic manifestations. The sessions will be shaped by the interests of the participants, but the idea is basically to do close readings of primary texts in a range of media, against the backdrop of different theoretical formulations of the avant-garde. We will meet on alternate Thursdays from 7-9pm, in Room 106 at Birkbeck School of Arts, 43 Gordon Square, London WC1H 0PD. The scheduled dates are as follows:
