The ArtLess Group is an open platform, network and community open to all School of Arts M.Phil/PhDs. Its a chance to develop collaborations and projects, to leverage funding, to connect to initiatives with others and to pool the collective creative resources and connections we all have> .
To take part here, please sign up first as a member at [email protected] - with just a line expressing your interest. We can put up notices of events, share interests, ask for help, garner support, think aloud. We will also be setting up an online system for the Group to communicate in more detail - this is a beginning.

Call for volunteers

Background

HQS Wellington is a former Royal Navy sloop that served through the Second World War as an escort. Today she is owned by the Wellington Trust whose purpose is the education of the the nation on the history of the Merchant Navy. It is now moored on Victoria Embankment, London.

Following a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Wellington Trust will stage a 7 month exhibition from August to December 2014 and March – May 2015 entitled Hospital and Troop Ships – Transporting the walking and the wounded in the First World War

The Exhibition aims to outline the role of the Merchant Navy during the First World War, looking specifically at hospital and troop ships that carried soldiers, equipment and military personnel across the waters.

Role outline

Exhibition volunteers will be expected to:

  • Welcome visitors onto the HQS Wellington and arrange tours
  • Assist visitors with any queries about the Exhibition
  • Operate the sound and video equipment related to the Exhibition
  • Contribute to providing a safe environment for visitors, staff and others on board
  • Ensure the security of the Exhibition
  • Assist with the setting up and closing down of the Exhibition at the beginning and end of the day

There will be further opportunities to train as a Tour Guide delivering Exhibition and Ship tours once the Exhibition has opened.
