Do we suffer from an urge to repeatedly reach for the 'trauma paradigm'?
The inaugural meeting of the contemporary fiction group at Birkbeck discussed Remainder, a novel by Tom McCarthy held by many at the group to be 'about' trauma. I think this is a misreading.Yes, as the blurb says, the narrator is "traumatised by an accident which involves 'something falling from the sky'" that leaves Remainder's hero obsessively reconstructing and re-enacting vaguely remembered scenes and situations from his past".
