Background

HQS Wellington is a former Royal Navy sloop that served through the Second World War as an escort. Today she is owned by the Wellington Trust whose purpose is the education of the the nation on the history of the Merchant Navy. It is now moored on Victoria Embankment, London.

Following a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Wellington Trust will stage a 7 month exhibition from August to December 2014 and March – May 2015 entitled Hospital and Troop Ships – Transporting the walking and the wounded in the First World War

The Exhibition aims to outline the role of the Merchant Navy during the First World War, looking specifically at hospital and troop ships that carried soldiers, equipment and military personnel across the waters.

Hi all, I have just begun a new role - First World War in Tower Hamlets Project Co-ordinator and am looking for volunteers to help with research and index a fascinating volume, the Poplar Military Tribunal Register, some 3,500 entries of men seeking exemption from military service. Please see below and contact me if interested -

Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives needs you!

We are seeking 10 volunteers to participate in this project with availability between June and September. Tasks include creating a digital name & address index for the military tribunal register enabling its listings to be searched via computer; assisting with the planning and delivery of the public events programme taking place in August, and researching aspects of life on the home front here in the Tower Hamlets to inform the exhibition. Volunteers will be supervised by newly appointed Project Co-ordinator Gary Haines. Please express your interest by emailing [email protected].uk or calling 020 7364 1290, by the end of May if possible. Thanks!

The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire is an interesting place which will probably be holding commemorative events for the First World War next year. There is a very moving statue of a blindfolded soldier dedicated to those shot at dawn, and individual memorials to those soldiers who were shot, for whom they have records. Here is the website address, although it was not working well when I tried to look. http://www.thenma.org.uk/

Dear all, I have booked room 112 (Research Student Meeting Room) School of Arts Gordon Square from 6pm - 8pm on the 27 November. I hope some of you can make it.

I suggest we meet at 6.20pm and finish at 7.20pm. There is no agenda so this is just a preliminary meeting to discuss what we may want out of the group. All suggestions welcome!

Many thanks

Gary
