Work In Progress Conference

We invite proposals for the 2013 Work in Progress conference, an annual Birkbeck event for students reading for their MPhil or PhD in the Arts and Humanities department. This is a welcoming and vibrant forum for students to present ongoing elements of their project, or even to develop future research topics, attended by staff and fellow students.

It is an excellent opportunity to develop your public speaking skills and discipline, as we will be enforcing a 15 minute time limit on all papers. The most successful papers don’t try to sum up an entire thesis’ worth of research, but instead present a section or theme of a student’s work in progress.

You are asked to make your submission, which should be no longer than 250 words, as a Word document, headed by your name and full contact details, your (broad) area of research, the title of your paper, and any audio-visual requests you may have (PowerPoint, dvd player etc.). Please note that we will be projecting presentations onto the walls of the Keynes library, so any high-colour images you wish to use in detail would be best included on a hand-out.

We encourage you to talk to supervisors and previous participants about the event, and to look at abstracts from last year’s conference which will give you a sense of what sort of abstract and topic have been successful.
