Memory and Violence

The Memory and Violence working group is a new interdisciplinary group, open to all with an interest in the relationships between collective memory, public history, trauma, violence, representation, and the politics of memorialisation and memory work. We will be reading some key texts in these fields, and will also be a space for postgraduate students and researchers to discuss their own work with each other. Hello!

I had a look at your online project and found both your approach and open activities really interesting. With this in mind I thought I would introduce my own practice as a performance poet/artist because I think it could fit with your programme of events in the future.

I perform as, La Beti, part of the performance is to recite a variety of poems by García Lorca including Deep Song, Gypsy Ballad and his essay about Duende. La Beti interprets the painful and the tragic words of Lorca's into an English performance animated by incorporating different contemporary art techniques through dance, expression and burlesque. The aim of the performance is to raise questions about tradition and folklore in a way both playful and serious.

I graduated with an MA in Hispanic Studies in 2006 based on the relationship of Federico García Lorca with flamenco (University College of Cork, Ireland). Since then I've been exploring the different female characters found in Lorca's poetry inhabiting the archetype of women they could represent in Spanish society such as the mother, the virgin, the bimbo and the whore. I represent them within the field of flamenco tension.

I have attached two videos to help you get a better understanding of my work. One is the promotional video and the other one is a short resume of one of my performances (Saint Clement Church, London)

Hope to be in touch soon,

Betihttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy-ZnGMuYGI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LsAScffOe0
